Artist Stament: When the theme of families came up, the first thing that came to mind was intimate images of families shown in commercials which often depict closeness in families as physical contact with happy faces.
2nd Place
Michael Raines
In Michael Raine’s ‘Uncanny Family’ series, the concept of ‘family’ is seen in a new light as AI tools are employed to distort, exaggerate, and unsettle typical moments within a middle-class family.

Artist Stament: With the rapid increase of AI technology and its ease of use, virtually anyone can “create” using some form of artificial intelligence now. While this has brought up concerns for many and questions around representation, authenticity and validity over what is and isn’t art, there’s no doubt that it will be – and already is – part of our everyday lives. But how could AI embed itself into the domestic and mundane, and how could it inform a picture as innocuous as the family snapshot, exposing something stranger and more subconscious?
“Uncanny Family” humorously plays with the idea of common family life moments, pushing it to a level of absurdity by integrating these snapshots into Photoshop’s recently released AI plug-in, to create a surrealistic and nightmarish tableaux of middle class modernity.

Artist Stament:
In my opinion, there are rarely such strong ambivalences in life as within the family. You hate each other, you love each other, you argue and you laugh with each other – it’s objectively completely insane.I wanted the pictures to reflect this emotional range and still show that we have a strong bond with our family members.
